6 (new) things Apple said about Mac Studio
Apple’s newly-introduced Mac Studio seem to be generating a really good response from across those lucky enough to have already taken a look at it. The machine seems to set new expectations for what to get from a pro desktop at its price.
6 (new) things Apple said about Mac Studio
TechCrunch achieved an on the record chat with key members of Apple’s Mac Studio design and product marketing team to discuss the computer and how the company approached the design.
It’s an interesting report with a great deal of detail, but six top line things seemed worth noting in passing. But you should read the report yourself.
- Mac Studio should be seen as a new Mac product line. It’s not intended as an upscale Mac mini, but as a new high-end desktop.
- Mac Studio is a modular system, in Apple’s eyes – but realistically only because it has a separate display, and you can choose between two chips.
- The computer was developed with a lot of collaboration between the hardware designers and Apple’s Pro Workflows team. The intention was and is to give professional users what they ask for.
- The number of available ports reflected this desire to deliver on need. It also reflected the need by many creatives to continue to use USB-A devices in their industry. The ability to just turn the Mac around to get to ports also matters.
- TechCrunch notes that an 8K timeline export from FCP took just three minutes longer to achieve on a $3,200 Mac Studio as on an a nearly maxed out $20,000 Mac Pro.
- Thermal design was an engineering challenge, given the ambition to host the processor in a smaller unit.
- The company even designed a unique drilling machine that makes the ventilation holes in the chassis.
- The Studio Display also works with Windows PCs. And its video camera will be improved with a software update.
Earlier on this week we learned that Apple’s most demanding pro users now account for perhaps 3% of its user base. More about the Mac here.
