7 emerging Apple September 7 iPhone and Apple Watch rumors
As Apple’s September 7 launch looms you can anticipate that everyone will be seeking to fill virtual column inches with every shade of rumor and conjecture concerning what to expect at that event and Apple’s plans. I thought I’d scribble out a quick digest of claims to have emerged in the last few days.
Apple’s gonna dent Reality
Forgive me if I saw this coming when Apple acquired an AR company called Dent Reality (though I did), but Apple allegedly plans to market its AR glasses around ‘Reality’. That’s going to mean you’ll run a Reality OS on your Reality One, Reality Pro and, (says Bloomberg) Reality Processor. How do we know this? Because allegedly a shell company associated with Apple has filed trademark applications for these names. Having said that it’s a wonder we didn’t know this before, given the filings were made in December.
Apple is expected to introduce its new headset in 2023, but the “sudden” revelation of its project Reality brand name does make me wonder if it intends keeping that externally mooted date. I think it will, but I can’t help but imagine we may get a look.
Apple’s got a tough watch
I dropped my Apple Watch on the bathroom floor the other day. It cracked but is still working. Sadly, it is out of warranty and I can’t afford another which means I’m still using it, (feel free to pop a few dollars my way via Kofi if you think I need more tech in my life).
But away from the scrawling sound of my tiny violin, it looks as if Apple has a way forward for Apple Watch users who want to indulge in adventure sports in the form of an Apple Watch Pro rugged smartwatch, which may appear next week. This will have a 47mm case, a larger screen, and faster processor than the current Apple Watch Series 7. And existing watch bands will sort of work but no.
And a health watch
The Apple Watch 8 will have a slightly updated design, better battery life and may deliver a body temperature sensor.
A new iPhone 14 camera and a new purple patch
We’ve heard plenty concerning iPhone 14, which may or may not boast an upgraded processor, depending on if you go pro or not. Now we think we learn the new devices will have an upgraded Ultra Wide Camera in the Pro models, but this will also raise the cost of the phone by c.$100. The 48MP camera will be fantastic in low light, so expect some fun Night Mode competition, I suppose. Otherwise, expect a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. Sadly the mini isn’t getting upgraded, the rumors claim. There won’t be a blue node, and high end devices will be available in dark purple, silver, gold, graphite, and green.
What about iPhone SE?
I’m filing this in possible. Jon Prosser reckons the next generation iPhone 14 will be the iPhone XR. That means 5G, a slightly faster processor and Touch ID, along with a larger battery. And Apple gets to use the same manufacturing tools.
Macs are on track, iPads ain’t so
Supply chain reports claim Macs are more available than before, though iPads remain scarce. Given we anticipate new models for both families in fall, this may just reflect slight improvements in the supply chain and preparation for product upgrades. You can wait up to 11 days for a new iPad now, apparently.
iPhones and Apple Watch gain satellite
There have been many claims Apple may put satellite connectivity inside iPhones and potentially Apple Watch. This would likely relate to making it possible to make emergency calls when there’s no cellular reception. It seems unlikely we’ll see this in Apple Watch this year, but it could be the start of something like an international Apple One broadband and voice call connectivity service. Which is cool. It also sees Apple take a step toward universal satellite based entertainment provision, which would probably be quite successful. (In related news, T-Mobile just added free TV+ streaming to its most expensive tariff).
There may be a few snippets of additional rumor and speculation to break over the weekend, but these seem to be the main items as time accelerates towards Apple’s launch next week.
