Disney+ brings Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio to Apple TV 4K
If you subscribe to Disney+ and own an Apple TV 4K you should probably update the Disney app right away, as it brings in support for Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio when used with the device and a set of AirPods.
Better listening with science
It’s not the biggest update in the world unless you happen to be that family that watches Disney’s catalog using Apple TV and AirPods, but it is an improvement of the 5:1 Dolby Digital Plus audio you had before. The Dolby Atmos support also extends to the OG HomePod when used as the default TV speakers.
What Spatial Audio does is to apply directional audio filters to turn sound into a 3D space. It’s a little smarter than that in that not only does it make you feel as if you are at the center of that soundscape, it is also smart enough to position the sound accurately as you move around your space. That last item has inevitable significance to AR glasses, by the way.
You can find out more about Spatial Audio on Apple devices here.
Netflix introduced spatial audio support early this month. “Netflix spatial audio helps to translate the cinematic experience of immersive audio to any stereo, so the work creators do to bring you into the story happens no matter what device you use…,” it wrote.
Apple at the movies, on TV
The move to improve the experience of movie watching on Apple TV comes as Apple makes a range of announcements concerning its TV+ service. These include new seasons of Trying, See, Criminal Record, For All Mankind, Surface and many more, along with new animated movie Luck (pictured above).
The content push continues to draw dividends. Apple has secured 52 Emmy Award nominations this year, with “Ted Lasso” alone accounting for 20 of these. Winners will be announced September 20.
Morgan Stanley recently predicted Apple may unlock an additional $1 trillion of market growthfrom its sustained installed base as it shifts to subscription mode.
