iPhone production in India predicted to hit 18% by 2025
Apple is now manufacturing iPhones in India. Driven by initiatives from the government there, it seems to be on target to make 18% of its smartphones in that country by 2025, a Bank of America report claims.
iPhone production set to boom in India
We know the company continues to ramp up iPhone production via its partners for a few years. Right now it has some big names – Pegatron, Foxconn, Tata Group – putting major production facilities in place. These are supported by India’s government who are providing incentives to help motivate these firms.
This stuff is a journey. At this point around 7% of iPhones are being made in India.
Commenting on this, Bank of America said, “We believe India could be a credible global supply chain alternative for mobile phone/electronics. Success in other sectors is also likely. We believe India’s efforts to cut imports/step-up exports could improve its macro-outlook.”
Local media reports claim smartphones have already become one of the top five goods exported from India. Indeed, the number of smartphones exported so far this year already exceed the number shipped in 2022.
Exports are building
Smartphone exports have already achieved $10.9 billion in the year, with around half of these being iPhones. In 2022, smartphones generated $5.4 billion.
In March, Counterpoint estimated that Apple generated around 30% of India’s smartphone exports.
Apple has been engaged in a multi-year journey to get to India. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, earlier this year said:
“India is at a tipping point. You can just feel the vibrancy, the dynamism, the feeling that anything here is possible. And it’s so great to be a part of it. It feels so great to be back.”
