You can now VPN your Apple TV for security and more
Things have changed for Apple TV, with both NordVPN and Express VPN now offering VPN protection apps for the Apple set top box. The news has evident implications for enterprise users, also for consumers seeking to use such software with their device.
The introduction of these apps follows the introduction of tvOS 17, which supports third-party VPN applications. Together this makes for better user privacy and security, and also provides an opportunity to stream content more freely online.
What are the benefits of VPN on Apple TV?
The biggest benefit is security. Once connected to a VPN server, third parties such as an ISP can no longer follow the user’s activities online.
A secondary benefit is that VPN users can access content from home when they travel. Lots of online content is location restricted. With the VPN, you can watch content you subscribe to legitimately while travelling.
A third benefit is that in the event an ISP is throttling performance for TV streaming, a VPN may masks that use making for a faster connection.
What NordVPN said
“Users often forget that mobile phones and computers are not the only gateways to your network for cybercriminals,” said Vykintas Maknickas, head of product strategy at NordVPN.
“A smart TV is usually connected to the internet, so it can also be hacked, and cybercriminals can spy on users, steal data, or even try to access other devices on the home network. A dedicated VPN app for Apple TV will allow our users to ensure cybersecurity and protect their privacy. Moreover, a VPN can even improve the streaming experience by increasing users’ privacy.”
What Express VPN said
“ExpressVPN already had the most extensive platform coverage in the industry, and the latest Apple TV app only adds to our long list of supported devices. Coupled with the latest improvements we’ve made to our Android TV app, we are delighted to provide our users with the best entertainment support—no matter the device they have at home,” said Samuel Bultez, head of product, ExpressVPN.
Signing in to either VPN app is pretty simple with a range of available servers on offer from multiple locations. A subscription to the service is required.
