Apple may be scant days away from announcing an announcement, maybe, given recent leaks from inside UK network, EE.
EE chief says 5G iPhone 12 launch ‘just days’ away
The news – first picked up by one of the most profitable Apple rumor sites on the planet – claims that EE boss, Marc Allera, told staff in an internal video:
“We are just days away from Apple’s next major launch, a 5G iPhone, which will be a huge boost for 5G.” Adding a lot more substance to this claim was the subsequent appearance of Apple’s own VP, Eddy Cue, in the self-same video.
So, EE: Apple and EE maintain a long and strong association in the UK. The best evidence for this being that the network was among the first in the world to deliver support for cellular connections on Apple Watch. The next tranche of evidence being its regular great deals on Apple kit, including quite charming Apple TV bonuses.
The two firms have form
Now, we know that when Apple introduces 5G it will kick start this section of the industry. We also know (don’t we?) that one of the big needs of the WFH generation is decent broadband, and that’s what (true, mmwave) 5G promises to deliver.
Now, I’m no cynic but true 5G is still a way down the line, but Apple’s coming move to push out a 5G iPhones will accelerate this, meaning that the WFH generation will suddenly have a device they really need to use. After all, not everyone trying to work from home is presently blessed with robust internet, particularly in rural, remote and developing nations – and it is a lot cheaper to put up a 5G mast than it is to lay cable.
So, Allera has a point.
And Apple’s announcement of a forthcoming iPhone announcement now feels like it may be days away… which, logically, we knew already, but there you go.
