Amazon now offers a Prime Video app for Mac (& it’s hungry)
Amazon has introduced an Amazon Prime Video app for the Mac, meaning Mac users don’t need to log into the Prime store on their Mac using a web browser to access what is there.
Amazon goes Apple Silicon native
The Intel and Apple Silicon native app offers all the company’s Prime Video content, supports offline viewing, and lets you purchase new content from inside the app so long as you have a card on file. Amazon is also making its other Prime content, principally sports content, available via the app.
You gain access to picture-in-picture mode. Purchases can also be made using Apple’s in-app payment system. Finally, the app syncs across your Prime account so you can pick up on what you are watching on another device as and when you like.
What the App Store says
The App Store listing tells us the app will:
- Download videos to watch offline.
- Continue to watch your favorite movie, TV show or a live event via Picture-in-Picture (PiP) while interacting with other apps or websites.
- Rent or buy new-release movies and popular TV shows (availability varies by marketplace).
- Multi-user profiles allow creating personalized entertainment experiences.
- Go behind the scenes of movies and TV shows with exclusive X-Ray access, powered by IMDb.
- AirPlay support.

Quite a hungry app
It is interesting how much data the app collects. If you use it, you can expect to the following data to be linked to you:
- Purchases,
- Location
- User Content
- Identifiers
- Diagnostics
- Financial info
- Contact info
- Search History
- Usage Data
- Other Data.
It may also be of interest to take a look at the extent to which Amazon intends to make use of this information in multiple ways.
Amazon last week introduced a new feature to the iPhone/iPad version of this app, a new tool that lets you shoot and share short clips taken from Amazon content.
