Apple has millions of iPhone users to convince to get a Mac
iPhone users are more likely to also own an iPad and Apple Watch than they are to own a Mac. This untapped audience could translate into future opportunity.
Most iPhone users own computers, many don’t own Macs
The latest Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) report attempts to scrutinize the extent of Apple’s attempt to persuade consumers to purchase other Apple toys.
It suggests that while iPhone users are also likely to have an iPad, Apple Watch and may have AirPods, just 41% of computers owned by them are Mac. Almost all iPhone buyers own a personal computer, either desktops or laptops (90%).
This means Apple has access to a huge potential market. Particularly now it has migrated to the M-series chips which also run iOS apps and may soon also run Windows.
All it must do is convince them to get a Mac.
What else do iPhone users own? The data states tablet devices (79%) and streaming TV devices (69%). Only 10% of iPhone buyers own a HomePod, representing 21% of the market for smart speakers among iPhone buyers.
Decoding the Mac data
In a sense the Mac ownership data isn’t particularly surprising.
We know that around a billion iPhones are currently in use worldwide. That means it’s not hard to anticipate that many who use the cross-platform product don’t yet own a Mac. Part of the appeal of iPhone and the iPod that made it possible was and is cross-platform support.
It is interesting to note that 84% of iPhone buyers with a tablet how own an iPad.
About two-thirds of iPhone buyers own a smartwatch. Three-quarters of those smartwatch owners have an Apple Watch. Almost 40% of iPhone buyers own a wireless Bluetooth earbud set. AirPods account for more than half of them.
Among iPhone buyers, 69% own a streaming video device, including Google Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV. Of these, only about one-quarter of iPhone buyers have an Apple TV streaming video device, representing a 39% share of such devices.
