Apple may introduce three waves of new Macs in 2022
The latest set of Mark Gurman’s uncannily informed claims have shipped, and they suggest seven new Macs will be introduced in three waves in 2022 as Apple’s M-chip evolution continues.
When do these waves take place?
The reporter claims Apple will introduce new Macs in March, May/June and Fall.
What Macs are coming?
The claims reprise some of what has already been anticipated:
- A new M1 Pro Mac mini
- An M2 13-inch MacBook Pro.
- A new Mac mini with an M2 chip
- A 24-inch iMac with M2
- A redesigned MacBook Air with M2 chip
- A 30(?)-inch iMac Pro, available with both M1 Pro and M1 Mac chips.
- A Mac Pro with either two or four M1 Max chips.
Which Macs ship when?
While the report feels a little speculative on some of the timing, it suggests the new Macs will appear around the following schedule:
March event:
-
- An M2 13-inch MacBook Pro.
- A new Mac mini with an M2 chip.
- A new M1 Pro Mac mini.
May/June event:
-
- The MacBook Air with M2 chip
Fall:
-
- A 30(?)-inch iMac Pro.
- A smaller footprint Mac Pro.
We’ve been expecting an event in March/April for months, particularly following recent regulatory filings.
What about 2023?
The report claims Pro and Max versions of the M2 processors will launch in 2023, along with the first M3 chip, the latter perhaps later in the year.
What’s going on with the M2 chip?
The M2 is the next generation Apple Silicon chip for Macs. At present it’s expected to be faster and to operate at lower power, and to retain the same 8-core architecture. It may see additional GPU cores.
Gurman also claims the M1 Max in new Mac Pros will be boosted, with up to 40-corres in one iteration.
What happens next?
It’s arguable that Apple now plays on at least equal terms in comparison with the rest of the PC industry. It is no longer constrained by the processors inside its devices and has become able to fully exploit its control of hardware and software in its products. This will inevitably help drive the firms presence in every market, including business markets.
Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers recently told clients Apple is at an “inflection point” for enterprise market share, as world wakes to what some have said for years.
