Apple Music’s got a (big) handful of songs to sing you
Apple is celebrating a milestone for its Music streaming service, which now offers over 100 million songs – that’s rather more than the 1,000 songs in your pocket we all once swooned over with the iPod.
A handful of songs to sing you never seemed so big
To celebrate this, Apple has introduced a brand new editorially-led daily series called Apple Music Today , in which the company’s music experts promise to highlight a new song every day in order to explain its history.
The series begins with the incomparable Sinead O’Connor and her song, ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.
Apple also seems to be promising to ramp up its music curation and recommendation system.
“With 100 million songs on Apple Music, you can explore genres you never knew existed and find your new favorite artist in places you would never expect. So take a dive, and let us guide you through,” the company says.
The entire history of music is in your pocket
Global head of editorial Rachel Newman wrote a piece in which she explains the significance of offering 100 million tracks, pointing out that this means, “The entire history, present, and future of music is at your fingertips or voice command.”
“But it’s more than just a number, representing something much more significant — the tectonic shift in the business of music making and distribution over these past two decades,” she writes. Adding later “One hundred million songs is evidence of a more democratic space, where anyone, even a new artist making music out of their bedroom, can have the next big hit.”

Think about it:
- In the 1960’s just 5,000 new albums shipped each year.
- Today, anywhere in the world, in 167 countries and regions on Apple Music, any artist of any description can write and record a song and release it globally.
- Every day, over 20,000 singers and songwriters are delivering new songs to Apple Music.
“One hundred million songs is evidence of a more democratic space, where anyone, even a new artist making music out of their bedroom, can have the next big hit,” said Apple.
