Apple sets us up for NYE with ‘Apple Music Sing’
Apple Music’s built in lyrics have always been great. Not only are they human curated which makes them a little more accurate than other services, but they scroll alongside the music giving you a chance to get lip sync perfect. Now they’ve really opened up for Apple Music Karaoke with Apple Music Sing.
What is Apple Music Sing?
Apple Music Sing makes it easy for people to sing along to their favorite songs with adjustable vocals and real-time lyrics. It effectively means entire families will be gathering around the tree, fire and Apple TV to sing songs all season long. Lucky for the neighbours!
It does this by providing multiple lyric views to help fans take the lead vocal, perform duets, take on backing vocals, and more. It basically means anyone can sing any song, given the huge depth of Apple’s catalog.
Apple Music Sing will be available later this month to Apple Music subscribers worldwide, and can be enjoyed on iPhone, iPad, and the new Apple TV 4K.
What Apple said
“Apple Music’s lyrics experience is consistently one of the most popular features on our service,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats.
“We already know our users all over the world love to follow along to their favorite songs, so we wanted to evolve this offering even further to enable even more engagement around music through singing. It’s really a lot of fun, our customers are going to love it.”
What do you get?
Apple Music Sing’s features are pretty good – though I imagine Apple’s already considering how to improve them. A pitch shift feature to optimize less accurate singing voices might be fun, for example – particularly as the feature is available on Apple TV. Here’s what you get now:
- Adjustable vocals: Users now have control over a song’s vocal levels. They can sing with the original artist vocals, take the lead, or mix it up on millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog.
- Real-time lyrics: Users can sing along to their favorite songs with animated lyrics that dance to the rhythm of the vocals.
- Background vocals: Vocal lines sung simultaneously can animate independently from the main vocals to make it easier for users to follow.
- Duet view: Multiple vocalists show on opposite sides of the screen to make duets or multi-singer tracks easy to sing along to.

Songs for singing
What makes this really good is that Apple Music Sing works with an Apple TV. Now, if the company can crack how to sync a room full of iPhones with Apple Music Sing on Apple TV (or even just one or two) then Apple really will be putting karaoke in any Apple TV-owning home. And while that’s probably going to strain neighborhood relations, it’s going to be a lot of fun for those who want to sing like the sun is shining in the bleak mid-winter.
Apple Music will also be launching a suite of more than 50 dedicated companion playlists featuring songs, duets, choruses, and anthems people like singing.
