Apple will update AirPods Max with Spatial Audio in April
Apple has promised a software update that should help maintain the second user market for AirPods Max and possibly rekindle people’s interest in those they own already.
That’s because the forthcoming patch will bring lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio to the over the ear headphones. The update unlocks 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, and provides support for Personalized Spatial Audio to deliver a more sonically accurate, uncompressed music experiences.
Something nice is gonna hppen to your ears
While this is great for music listening, the company also thinks it will benefit people in the business of music production. As Apple sees it, creative users will be able to plug in via USB to help them when songwriting, beat making, producing, and mixing their music.
But what makes this more interesting is that when using the USB-C cable, AirPods Max will become the only headphones that enable musicians to both create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.
Lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio enable music creators to fully utilize AirPods Max throughout their entire professional workflow on Logic Pro and other music creation apps. Gamers and livestreamers can also benefit from ultra-low latency audio, which significantly lowers lag time, and is on par with the native built-in speakers on Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
Coming in April
Lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio will be available in April as a free firmware update with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 for AirPods Max with USB-C. AirPods Max are currently available for $549 (U.S.) in five colors — midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange.
