Details concerning Apple’s M3 chip details are leaking now
Apple Silicon continues to weave its profound magic across every single Apple product it runs inside, so it is interesting that speculation concerning the M3 family has begun to appear.
Holy Mac chip, baby
The primary speculation is what we think we know already, of course. The M3 family should be built using 3nm process technology from TSMC, which means they should be deliver even more impressive computational performance per watt of power consumed. That in turn means we’re looking at a chance to create brand new product designs that just weren’t possible using hotter chips. This should (some say at last) translate into better battery life, along with other advantages TBR (To be Revealed).
Now we get a little more insight from the man who seems to have a direct line to every Apple office, who claims Apple is now testing a new M3 chip – and tells us that processor offers:
- 16 core CPU.
- 40 core GPU (as previously claimed by The Information).
- 48GB RAM.
This is the processor you can expect to find inside a future MacBook Pro, and Apple will allegedly give us the first look at the M3 series later this year, Gurman suggests, calling this the M3 Max. Apple is also testing new iMacs with this chip, the report claims.
The Mac family circle
In previous reports, we’ve learned other specifications for the M3 family, which also includes one version has 12 CPU cores, 18GPU cores, and 36GB memory.
We’ve also heard the chips contain six high-performance cores and six efficiency cores, which should also make for a much faster Mac. This compares to the M2 Pro chip which offers 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU and 16GB of RAM.
The transition is scheduled for October the report said. That seems earlier than expected but given Apple has apparently booked an entire year of processor production from TSMC, it’s possible the company just wants to press home its chip advantage.
All the same, don’t hold your breath too long, Apple will drip feed Mac models boosted by the chip over the next year. You can also dream of M3 Pro and M3 Mac chips inside pro machines next year.
Apple Silicon continues to deliver the company a significant market advantage – and it now appears the end of the year will once again be festooned with new for Mac users once again.
