What commands can I give HomePod?
With superior audio quality and a range of advanced technologies designed to reinforce use of HomePod as a sophisticated home audio solution, it’s no surprise the biggest focus of the HomePod is on use of the system to listen to and control your Apple Music collection. So, you can ask Siri to:
- Play
- Pause
- Stop
- Skip forward, Skip Back
- Shuffle this album, turn Shuffle on, turn Shuffle off
- Repeat this album or track, or “turn repeat off”.
- Play my favorites
- Play Beats 1 Radio
- Play something by [name of artist]
- Play [name of specific song]
- Play something mellow
- Play the newest album by [name of artist]
- Play [song name] after this song
- Play [name of music genre]
- When was this song released
- Play more songs like this, or like that
- Who is the [name instrument] in this song
- You can also improve Siri’s music taste using phrases like:
- I like this, or “I like this song” to add a song to favorites
- Never play this song again
- Add this to my [name] playlist
- What song was the top of the UK charts at Christmas 2009 (you can specify any date)
- One of the best new features in Siri is its new ability to launch and stream live news, sport, weather and traffic
- When was this song recorded
- Play top songs for 1945

- Hey Siri, play me news from NPR, CNN, ESPN or others
- Play me podcasts from [name]
Siri in the smart home
- “Hey Siri, turn on the lights”
- Hey Siri turn on the lights in the kitchen
- “Hey Siri, make the room cooler”
- “Hey Siri, make it warmer downstairs”
- “Dim the bedroom lights”
- “What is the air quality”
- “Close the blinds”
- “What’s the temperature”
- You can also link Siri up to scenes you’ve already made in HomeKit, you can then arrange for these to be triggered by a phrase, such as “Good Morning”.

Beyond music and news
Siri in HomePod has talents beyond music and news:
- Hey Siri, remind me to water the plants
- Set a time for XX minutes (or seconds)
- How many days until Christmas
- Check flight status
- Measurement conversions, for example “what are five inches in centimetres?”, or “what are 5 litres in pints?”
- Hey Siri, add apples to the shopping list
- You can also create and share lists, make a shopping list you share with your family, for example.
HomePod communicator
Siri can deal with communication as weak as other useful tasks.
- Hey Siri, send XXX a Message saying I’m running late
- Hey Siri, can you read me that text
- You can start or receive a call on your iPhone and hand it off to HomePod.
- Hey Siri, text [name] meet me at the N19
- Wake me up at 10am
- Tell me the news
- Play the [insert name] podcast
- What books are written by [name]
- Flip a coin
Touch came too
You don’t always need to speak. HomePod also understands a few touch controls:
- Tap: Play/Pause
- Triple tap: Play Previous Track
- Tap or hold plus: Volume Up
- Tap or hold minus: Volume Down
- Double tap: Next Track
- Touch and hold: Siri
