How to add notes to passwords in iCloud Keychain
The capacity to add notes to passwords in iCloud Keychain is Apple’s latest security-focused improvement which it will make available in iOS 15.4.
What is this?
Most password managers now let you add notes to the codes you manage. Some may use these to store pin codes, previous passwords or the answers used for security questions used to access that site or service.
What this isn’t is a notes app. If you want to store notes within your password manager you can’t, though you can create password-secured entries in the Apple Notes app.
Where are passwords kept?
To create a note you’ll need to add the password first.
You’ll find specific passwords in Settings>Password. You’ll need to authenticate to access this section using your Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. You’ll see all your passwords and logins provided as a list.

How to add notes to a password in iCloud Keychain
You need to have created a password before you can add a note to it. You also need to login to iCloud. Once you’ve created a password you will be able to add a note to it. To do so, you should access your Password section (above), select the password you want to add a note to and follow this path:
- When you select the password, you’ll see a new Add Notes
- Tap the Add Notes button and a text box will appear.
- Now type your note.
- When you’ve finished tap Done in the top right corner and the note will be saved with your password.
The note will be kept stored alongside the password entry in your Settings>Passwords collection. These fields now include the site/service, user name, password, your notes, and offer tools to setup verification codes and change (and delete) passwords.
The feature will appear in iOS 15.4 at potentially the same time as Apple is expected to introduce the 5G ready iPhone SE 3. More iCloud-related hints, tips and news is available here.
