How to use Offline Mode to access Apple News+ anywhere
If you are an Apple News+ subscriber you can access a new Offline Mode that lets you read some content even when you are offline.
What does Offline Mode do?
Offline Mode lets you read Top Stories and News+ content even while offline. This also extends to Apple News Today audio briefings (where available), full magazine issues, narrated articles, and the new puzzles. The idea is that you can read your news selections while you are offline, on the metro, or in a place without bandwidth.
How does it work?
Available with iOS/iPad OS 17.5 or later, Offline Mode is available only to News+ subscribers and only on iPhone and iPad. To enable it, follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Tap News.
- Turn on Background App Refresh and Automatic Downloads.
How to choose content
Once you’ve turned Offline Mode in News+ on, you may decide what content you want made available to you.
- Open Settings.
- Tap News.
- Tap Download Options.
- You can select from any of the following options: Recent Stories; Saved Stories; Magazine Issues; Puzzles; Audio Stories.
- Once selected this content will download to your device when it is connected to both Wi-Fi and power.
- Over a cellular connection only the top stories in the Today feed will be downloaded.
How to manage storage
All these stories take up storage space on your device, which you may want to manage. You can do so by selecting a more limited selection of content (removing Audio Stories, for example). You can also employ the Optimize Storage item. When this is enabled your device will download smaller versions of images in stories you want to read. The option turns on automatically when your iPhone is low on storage.
Content refreshes any time you are back on a good connection.
