iPhone 15 goes O-RAN with Amazon & Boost Infinite push deal
Apple is becoming a services company – you can rent its hardware through partners. But it’s keeping things subtle.
Here’s the latest move. This one means you can pick up an iPhone 15 on Amazon with Boost Infinite – and means you gain access to an Open RAN network for the first time! Read on.
What’s the story?
The new iPhone 15 range is available on Amazon on a postpaid monthly service with BoostInfinite from September 22.
What that means is that subscribers can access the latest iPhone every year for $60/mo. – including the just released model. I am pretty certain Bloomberg reporter, Mark Gurman, will be wanting to explore the next part of this promise, which is an “easy sign-up and activation journey.” You can also get one on BoostInfinite, apparently.
The idea is that a person who wants one of the new iPhones can head to Amazon, click the buttons to add the device to their shopping cart, and get hold of one of these things. That’s nice, if it works out, given reports availability has slipped to November for some models.
What they told me is this:
“This announcement is just the latest addition to our longstanding partnership. In 2021, AWS and DISH Wireless announced a strategic collaboration to leverage AWS infrastructure and services to build the first and only, cloud-native, 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN). This marked the first time a 5G network would run fully on the cloud.”
The news here is that iPhone 15 is now compatible with O-RAN, and that this is the first time these things have been certified for a network based on the tech.
What they said
John Swieringa, president of technology and COO, DISH Wireless noted, “Our Open RAN network covers over 73 percent of the US population with broadband and we haven’t stopped there. We now have the largest commercial deployment of 5G voice, or VoNR, in the world, reaching more than 100 million Americans in over 60 markets, and we’re launching new markets every month.”
The small print from the release
“Members get up to $1,000 off the new iPhone 15 lineup and the latest iPhone every year while enjoying unlimited talk, text and data and access to America’s Smart NetworkTM – all for only $60/m. Members also receive North America Connect and International Connect8. Plus, members can customize their service with Add-Ons, like a Data Hotspot and Speed Pass, and have the freedom to change, add or remove these services at any time.
“Get the latest iPhone every year. After 12 consecutive monthly payments, members can upgrade to the latest iPhone model at no extra cost. Customers also have the flexibility to upgrade to larger storage capacity and iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone Pro Max models or swap for different colors, when they initially sign up, and after each 12 months of membership.”
