LG just put an Apple TV inside your LG TV
As promised at CES last year, LG has begun improving many of the televisions it sold in 2019 with a software update that adds support for the Apple TV app.
Apple TV may be coming to a set near you
The update, for 2019 models, is being made available for televisions sold in over 80 countries.
A press release from the company declares:
“LG Electronics (LG), which introduced its 2020 smart TVs with the Apple TV app at CES last month, is now launching the Apple TV app for compatible 2019 LG smart TVs in the United States and more than 80 other countries.
Easily accessed from the LG Home Launcher, the Apple TV app gives LG TV owners the ability to subscribe to and watch Apple TV+, Apple’s new video subscription service that features popular Apple Originals such as “The Morning Show,” “See,” “Servant” and “Little America.”
Who gets the update?
The update is being made available to all of the NanoCell and OLED TVs LG sold last year.
LG hasn’t confirmed anything for older (2018) models, but has promised that the Apple TV app will be made available to them “later this year”.
How to install the update?
You’ll need to get your TV online and check for a firmware update, though the rollout is likely to be staggered across time. So, for example, the UM7X and UM6X series TVs will receive support “later this month.”
What about AirPlay 2?
The company added AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to its televisions sold in 2019 last fall. This year’s models have both technologies as standard.
