Microsoft ends support for iOS 13 in OneDrive app
Apple recently confirmed that just 7% of iPhones and 14% of iPads are using iOS 13 or earlier, and this is prompting developers, including Microsoft, to end support for older versions of the OS.
Microsoft warns users to upgrade
Microsoft today confirmed imminent plans to end OneDrive support for iOS/iPad OS 13.
In a note provided along with the latest version of its OneDrive app for iPhones and iPads (Version 12.62.5), the company said:
“We would like to let our users know that we are planning on dropping support for iOS and iPadOS 13 soon. OneDrive will continue to support the current version of iOS/iPadOS (15) and the one immediately before that, iOS/iPadOS 14.”
The company confirmed plans to end support for older versions of Mac and Windows operating systems late 21. Mac users should now upgrade to macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later to continue using the app.
Why stay up-to-date
For developers, it makes sense to migrate to recent versions of those operating systems they support. Not only does it reduce the cost in terms of development resources, but supporting the latest systems also means software can carry modern features and offer a more consistent experience across all supported platforms.
The ability to maintain lock step with current editions of the OS is most easily achieved on Apple’s platforms. This is because most users of those platforms will upgrade once new editions ship, but also because even those who do not tend to be only a version behind, unless using older equipment.
Microsoft continues to support Apple’s platforms
Microsoft has been pushing lots of innovation into all its productivity products for Mac, iPhones, and iPads. Just recently, the company introduced a version of OneDrive fully native for Apple Silicon Macs. Microsoft Teams meetings are now supported by CarPlay and Defender for Endpoint has also become M-native. Of course, this time last year the company introduced mouse and trackpad support to Excel on iPad.
