Rumor: Leaked benchmarks say A17 Bionic chips are super-fast
Surprising almost nobody, Apple’s upcoming A17 Bionic chip is once again going to be faster than the fastest mobile processor anyone expects to see from other smartphone makers, according to leaked benchmarks.
Do be warned not to place too much trust in these claims as the author is relatively unknown and there is no additional verification at this time.
Huge benefits of Apple Silicon
The leak claims a 3nm A17 Bionic achieves a single-core score of 3,269 and a multi-core score of 7,666. That’s a great deal faster than the as yet unreleased 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that’s supposed to be inside the Galaxy S24+, a report claims. That latter mobile chip gives up 2,223 single-core and 6,661 for multi-core.
These are significant differences.
It means the next iPhone will be almost 50% faster than the best available Android smartphone on some tasks, and 15% faster on all the rest.
Interestingly, the A16 Bionic achieves 2,531 single-core and 6,460 for multi-core, which tells its own story.
That story is that the fastest Android devices that haven’t yet shipped are at last capable of competing with last year’s iPhone. You can see that in any way you like, but it must be seen as a testament to the strong work being done by Apple’s silicon teams.
Faster, smaller, better
The third benchmark is Compute.
On this, A17 Bionic scored 30,669, which is far faster than the A16 Bionic which gains 23,000. We don’t have the data for the Snapdragon chip, but you can rest assured it won’t deliver as highly as this.
In part the power of the processor is due to the smaller chipset, the addition of additional transistors and significantly faster on-chip performance due to being a 3nm chip.
And 3nm Macs are coming too
These details look really promising, particularly on the back of recent claims concerning the also 3nm chip that’s coming to M3 Macs in future. Those claims are that the chips will boast considerably more cores and that Apple will begin the transition to those new processors in October.
Apple Silicon basically means Apple now makes the best available mass market computers, along with the best available smartphones. And the company’s lead on competitors seems to be firmly established at this point.
