Sony begins adding Apple TV to sets in U.S. and Europe
Sony in Europe and the U.S. has begun updating recent smart televisions with the addition of the Apple TV app, the company has confirmed.
Sony gets the Apple TV habit
With the app installed, users can access Apple TV channels and TV+ on their device, but if they want a deeper app experience they’ll still need the Apple TV box.
The Apple TV app will begin arriving in Europe and the U.S. on Sony’s XH90 series via a software update that should begin being distributed to sets today.
The app features Apple TV+, Apple’s new video subscription service offering original shows, movies and documentaries from the world’s most creative storytellers, including Apple’s outstanding series, ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Greyhound,’ ‘The Banker,’ ‘Boys State’ and more.
You can subscribe to Apple TV channels and watch ad-free and on demand, directly on the Apple TV app and up to six family members can share subscriptions to channels using their personal Apple ID and password.
Life for rent
Users can also rent movies and TV shows from Apple and subscribe to Apple’s service using from the Sony television – and get one year of free access when they purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch or Mac.
Some Sony TVs already support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. AirPlay 2 lets users stream videos and other content from their iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to their smart TV, while HomeKit lets you control the TV from the Home app.
This is a slightly slow roll out – (my own TV hasn’t received the update yet), but Sony promises the Apple TV app will launch on Sony’s select 2018 TV models and most 2019 and 2020 models by the end of the year.
