tvOS 13: How to make your Apple TV remote great again
Apple changed how one of the most widely used controls on the Apple TV remote works in tvOS 13. Here is how to change it back.
What has Apple done?
Back in the dim distant past of summer, tapping the TV button (the one with a TV icon) on your Apple Remote (or app) automatically took you back to your Home screen.
We all used it, and we all knew that a long press of that button was all it took to switch everything off – that bit still works.
But what Apple has changed is that when you press the TV icon you are now taken into its TV app, which is logical in that the company wants that app to become the hub of your television watching; but not every Apple TV user wants this.
How do I change it back?
The good news is that it is super-easy to make your Apple TV button do what you want it to do, and it’s as simple as one, two, three:
- One: Open Settings on your Apple TV
- Two: Open Remotes and Devices
- Three: In the top Remote Section look at the Home button setting, which will say ‘Apple TV App’. Click this and it will turn to ‘Home’.
Now your old way of navigating your Apple TV will be restored. When you press the TV button on your remote you will automatically go to the Home screen. Now you can choose how you want to consume content.

Tip:
If you prefer the Home button-based way to navigate Apple TV then I think you should make sure to place a shortcut to the TV app on the top row. That way it will be easy to use that service when you choose to do so.
Hope this helps!
