Watch: Apple opens Delhi store to a big reception
Apple’s second retail store in India opened April 20 as government ministers emerged happy from a meeting with CEO, Tim Cook, who seems to intend to treble the company’s investments there. “We are all in on India,” he has said.
What happened at Apple’s opening in Delhi?
Apple opened the doors to a huge crowd of enthusiastic Apple fans.
Hundreds gathered at Select City Mall in Delhi and Cook was seen welcoming customers to the show. One visitor said they’d “Come only to see Tim Cook, the man he is.”
The tree-lined store gives shoppers a chance to explore and learn more about the company’s products and provides customers with time with expert users to fix issues. Applauding staff met cheered the first store visitors, with fans bringing posters, Macs and all kinds of Apple memorabilia to show the Apple boss.
Feted like a Bollywood star, Cook cheerily signed autographs for the people. It looked like the old days of Apple openings, as the videos show.

Cook opened a larger store in Mumbai earlier this week, after which he went to visit various local luminaries, met with ministers, and more. Apple is committed to growing and investing across the country,” he wrote.

The CEO also met a talented five-year old coder called Ranvir Sachdeva at the Delhi store opening. The young boy showed the CEO his coding skills, and Cook personally invited the child to attend WWDC, so impressed was he.

Meetings with the government
Cook met with government ministers, including PM Modi yesterday.
Today we’re learning a little more about what was discussed, and the gossip seems to confirm what we’d thought was happening: Apple is increasing its investments in India. Some highlights:
- Apple plans to build iPads and AirPods in India, along with iPhones.
- Apple could double or triple investments in India along with exports in the next few year
“I am very confident that this Apple-India partnership has a lot of headroom for investments, growth, exports and jobs – doubling and tripling over coming years,” Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the deputy minister for information technology, told Reuters.
