WWDC: Apple invites Gemini, Claude, and others to join OpenAI (maybe)
RUMOR: While Meta may not make the guest list on this occasion, Mark Gurman speculates that other AI engines will be invited to stake space on iPhones soon, jostling for position against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. That’s one way to fill the party while we wait for Apple Intelligence to turn up.
Coming to WWDC?
If Apple does do this then it makes sense to expect some of these companies to join Apple open the WWDC stage to announce their debut on the platform. That’s going to make for some super-interesting product demos as those AI firms who do get stage time jostle to make their service the most interesting to the millions who will be watching the keynote at that time.
Gurman points out that Apple told us to expect Google Gemini on iPhones last year at WWDC. That hasn’t happened yet, but he believes a deal will eventually be made. “I expect one to be in place and announced as early as WWDC,” he said.
Gemini won’t be alone. He believes AI solutions from Anthropic and others may also make the grade, though he doesn’t expect Meta’s Llama will gain position in this wave.
Giving people choice?
It will be interesting to see how Apple makes different AI solutions available. Will it give people the chance to decide which model to use on a per-question basis, or will it be one of the soon to be fast growing number of user choices on setting up a new device? If so, expect a choices box similar to the browser choice dialog Apple has developed for use in the EU.
We will no doubt learn more about this over the next nine weeks as Apple sets the frame for WWDC, which begins June 9.
